Jess Made a Pinata!

We celebrated my daughter’s first birthday over the weekend, and something you should know about me is that I am very much a DIY’er when it comes to decor or costumes for events. So for this first birthday I went all out making a highchair tutu, flower backdrop for a photo booth and, yes, a pinata!

I got the idea from a post I found on Pinterest and honestly it was so easy. After seeing how long it took for a group of almost 20 adults to destroy it, I’m definitely calling this project a win! It took me about 3 days to put together (obviously not constantly working on it!), and it cost me $6 to make…much less than anything I was finding to buy!

So, here are 5 simple steps if you want craft your own pinata:

  1. Trace and cut out your shape on two pieces of cardboard.
  2. Cut a cereal box into strips about 3-4 inches wide (might need a couple cereal boxes depending on your shape)
  3. Use masking tape to attach the strips to both pieces of cardboard (I used a thick piece of cardboard for the top and flap)
  4. Make a flap and two holes in the top and thread a ziptie through for hanging
  5. Decorate!

*Tip: If you can find tissue paper that is already cut into fringe you can save a lot of time!

Check out pictures of the process and my husband Drew showing off my creation below…yes my dog Molly is in a fairy costume…we had a theme! Haha!
